Being chronically bored at work can have damaging consequences – and we need to talk about it more, say experts.

While burnout is linked to long hours, poor work-life balance and our glamorization of overwork, boreout happens when we are bored by our work to the point that we feel it is totally meaningless.

Experts say that this phenomenon – which occurs across industries – can result in some of the same health problems for workers.

It's also bad for companies, because a workforce with boreout can lead to high staff turnover.

Fahri Ozsungur, an associate professor of economics at Mersin University, in Turkey, points out that combating the phenomenon isn't just down to the individual.

"Giving meaning to the job is not just up to the employee,” he says, instead, it's up to management to create an office culture that makes people feel valuable.

>Four-day week 'an overwhelming success'

Trials of a four-day week in Iceland were an "overwhelming success" and led to many workers moving to shorter hours, researchers said.

The trials, in which workers were paid the same amount for shorter hours, took place between 2015 and 2019.

Productivity remained the same or improved in the majority of workplaces, researchers said.

The trials led unions to renegotiate working patterns, and now 86% of Iceland's workforce have either moved to shorter hours for the same pay, or will gain the right to, the researchers said.

Workers reported feeling less stressed and at risk of burnout, and said their health and work-life balance had improved.

>Elephants to be moved to Kenyan wild

An entire herd of elephants from a British zoo will be released into the wild in Kenya in what conservationists have hailed as a world first.

The 13 elephants live at Howletts Wild Animal Park in Kent, southern England, and will be flown more than 7,000 kilometers to Kenya, according to a press release from animal conservation charity the Aspinall Foundation on Tuesday.

None of the animals have ever lived in the wild.

It will be the first time that a herd of elephants is "rewilded" in the world, organizers say. The charity said that it hopes the project will discourage the global trade in elephants and encourage the return of animals to the wild where possible, adding that no elephants belong in captivity.

>Titanic is vanishing

The Titanic is disappearing. The iconic ocean liner that was sunk by an iceberg is now slowly succumbing to metal-eating bacteria: holes pervade the wreckage, the crow's nest is already gone, and the railing of the ship's iconic bow could collapse at any time.

The 109-year-old ocean liner is being battered by deep-sea currents and bacteria that consume hundreds of pounds of iron a day.

Some experts have predicted the ship could vanish in a matter of decades as holes yawn in the hull and sections disintegrate.
